As part of an Integrated Garbology unit this year, 5th and 6th graders at Lab School used tiles destined for the landfill to learn art and math while making an old counter top beautiful.
Floor tiles were painted by the 5th and 6th grade art classes while learning about color, pattern and design. The painted tiles were passed on to the 6th grade math classes. 6th graders carefully measured the counter top and calculated how many tiles would be require to cover it. The students then calculated the number of tiles each student would need to cover their particular section. Finally, they arranged the tiles into designs of their choosing and attached them to the top of the counter.
